First Friday Discussion Notes: Participatory Fundraising

Drew Clyde: McLean Bible Church: Youth Group’s New Years Eve Event 2008

What: NY Eve --> “This year, let’s do something different … take some risks” (not just another party)

Partnered with World Hope International in Alex. VA

Goal: Raise $25K to build & operate AIDS orphanage in Africa via NY Eve Event

Not much excitement from kids at first

Tactics:
Sold wristbands & tshirts at school
Adults sponsored kids at event
Evangelistic even too (more motivation for adults to fund, send kids)
Program: FUN but also orphanage environment (Experiential)

Outcome
Raised $150K ($50K of which was match from one donor)
1700 students
4-6 orphanages built and funded for ops

Kids
What they have
relationships
drive
inspirational influence on others, incl adults
idealistic outlook
people want to see them [succeed]/[catch vision]
What do we have to offer kids
Angel Tree
[wish we could lock them up in prison for a night, but seems impossible]
we evangelize others; kids like that (?)
injustice – AT Kids
injustice / sympathetic situation: broken families
injustice – prison terms don’t fit crimes?
James: “visit prisoners”
Obey Christ
“…you do this for me”
injustice: God doesn’t abandon them BUT WE DO
undo “tough on crime”
undo marginalization
respect God’s imprint on them, image in them

Reliance Upon God: the ANCHOR to everything

Biblical Principle of Relevance
- 2 Tim 2:2
- “Know those who labor among you…”
